Location and laying the foundation

First, we recommend checking with your municipality about any requirements regarding the location of your building and any permits you may need. Next, ensure your desired spot is elevated with well-drained soil, where no water will accumulate. You’ll need to remove the topsoil and replace it with gravel.

Your Bunkie should clear the ground by at least 8’’ for adequate air circulation under your structure. The chosen footings should be level and square (the diagonal measurements should be equal). Your Bunkie floor and walls (183’’ x 183’’) must be supported on the footings of the chosen material. You will need either 12 footings, or nine footings total with three compound beams under the floor joists.

Various options for the foundation are available, depending on your preference and budget:
– Blocks of treated wood, 6’ x 6’ or 8’ x 8’: $
– Solid concrete blocks: $$
– Helical piers: $$$
– Cast cement footings: $$$$
